Zinedine Zidane is a retired French soccer player that is regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time by many.

Zinedine Zidane comes from Algerian descent with the parents Smail and Malika migrating to Paris, France in 1953 from a small village called Aguemone in the Berber-speaking region of Kabylia in eastern Algeria before the start of Algerian War.

After struggling to find work in Paris, Zidane's parents moved to a suburb of La Castellane, Marseille during the mid 1960s where on June 23th, 1972 little Zinedine Zidane was born as the youngest of 5 siblings.

His father worked in a warehouse mostly night shifts while his mother was a housewife.

The house he lived in was so small that he and his siblings had to take turns to sit down and eat.

Zinedine Zidane earned his first cap with the French national team as a substitute in a friendly match against the Czech Republic on August 17th, 1994.

Zidane scored twice to tie the game 2-2 after being down 2-0 against the Czech Republic.

He helped France reach the semi finals during the Euro 96 but France was knocked out in a penalty shootout against Czech Republic, after the match ended 0-0 in regular time.

1998 World Cup was the first World Cup Zidane participated in and this years tournament was held in his home country France.

Zidane played a major role in the midfield helping France advance through the group stages but missing the last sixteen match against Paraguay due to being sent off against Saudi Arabia in the group stages.

Before the 2006 FIFA World Cup final in Berlin, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.

Having announced retirement from both club and international soccer after the 2006 World Cup, everyone knew that this final would also be the last match of his career.

Only 7 minutes into the match Zidane would convert a penalty kick to give France 1-0 lead and also become only the 4th player in World Cup history to score a goal in two different finals.

Italy came back to tie the game in the second half to 1-1 and force it into extra time.

In 110th minute of extra time Zidane ended his professional career with a red card after headbutting Marco Materazzi (who had insulted Zidane's sister) in the chest.

He later said that he "would rather die than apologize to Materazzi".

Italy went on to win the 2006 World Cup after beating France 5-3 on penalties, the game ended 1-1 after extra time.

Following the red card, Zinedine Zidane confirmed that his professional soccer career on club and international level has come to an end and that he would not go back on his decision.

Zinedine Zidane is regarded as one of the greatest soccer players ever lived by many other soccer legends such are Pele, Beckenbauer, Beckham, Roberto Carlos and many others.

He is still active in the Real Madrid squad as the sporting director and has done many charity events.
